Cut Paste or Wound Sealant is essential for protecting pruning wounds. Pruning wounds that are sealed heal far quicker and are less likely to become infected or dry out causing prolonged healing time.

If you must cut a larger branch during the growing season, cut paste should be applied to the cut. Using the propper bonsai tool for the job will not only promote faster healing but also prevent ugly scars where they are not wanted.
Always seal cuts with a putty-type cut paste. The next year cut the branch shorter, leaving only one green shoot intact. In the spring of the third year, cut the branch back to a short stub and seal it well.
If you crack a branch but it remains on the trunk, stop bending immediately. Glue or cut paste the crack and leave the wire on the branch to make it stable. Do not bend at the cracked area for one year or more. Branch will be fragile for years.
When pruning branches you should always use sharp tools and seal the wound to help the healing process. Japanese cut paste or wound sealant are ideal for this.
