Cuttings are the method of cutting branches from a growing tree and
inserting them in soil to produce new plants. It is the most commonly used
method to propagate high quality bonsai material. The advantages of this ...

Cuttings
A good container for rooting the cuttings is a shallow wooden box 1 by 2 feet or so, with some holes in the bottom, or a shallow pot.

Conifer cuttings
Most Conifers are easy to root from cuttings (Pines being the exception). They can be treated as softwood cuttings, but will take longer to root. When removing them from the stock plant break them off with a 'heel' of old wood.

Juniper Cuttings
Autumn is also a great time to take those conifer cuttings. I take all of my juniper cuttings about now because I seem to have more time and the wood has hardened off just the right amount.

Make sure that the plant you are going to use for cuttings is in good condition, free from disease and pests and has been watered a few hours beforehand.

Cuttings from hardwood will take a longer time to show new growths and take a lot longer to grow strong roots. Tiny buds will not appear till spring. And typically, this type of cutting will not be ready for repotting until the next spring.

Cuttings should be dipped into rooting hormone and inserted into a seed tray or plant pot of a standard pre-mixed cutting compost or equal parts peat (or substitute) and perlite or sharp sand.

Cuttings that have dropped all foliage and have shrivelled are unlikely to strike; these become a likely source of fungal infection and should be removed.
Always use Hormone Rooting Powder; it contains fungicides and greatly increases rooting rates.

Cuttings fall into three categories, 1)softwood, 2) semi hardwood, and 3) hardwood.

Pruning Bonsai, cutting branches to shape the tree

Without doubt the most important way to train a Bonsai is to prune it on a regular base.

Besides the two bonsai trees, I have also got two small Crape Myrtle (aka Lagerstroemia indica , or ç´"è-‡ in Chinese) cuttings from the mini bonsai class of Hong Kong Institute of Lingnan Penjing. In less than 1.

Cuttings may also be rooted in water, but the success rate seems to be less than the baggy technique and rooting may be more uneven.

Won't cutting the roots of a plant kill it?
Yeah, pretty much...(not expecting that were you?) But pruning and combing the roots of a Bonsai doesn't mean cutting off the roots.

Taking Cuttings
The best time to propagate heathers is mid- to late summer. Fill a pot with a mixture of half sand and half sterile peat moss, and make holes for your cuttings with a thin twig.

Cutting - A part of a tree, usually a branch or stem, used for the propagation of a new tree.
Deciduous - Trees that go dormant and loose their leaves with the onset of cold weather.

Cutting wire without damaging the tree requires skill in any case.
But without the proper wire cutters it is nearly impossible.

Cutting-grown plant, one of five pieces given by a senior bonsai fancier and having been wrapped in a Kleenex during a trip to my place before being planted in potting mix and treated in the normal way of propagation.

Cuttings - Cuttings are one of the most popular methods to propagate quality bonsai material. Cuttings are an excellent propagation method, because they will create numerous trees that are genetically identical to the " parent " tree or bonsai.

Cutting grafts
A cutting graft (also called twig graft) is made by grafting a leafy scion to an unrooted leafy cutting. This technique.

Root Cuttings: Root cuttings, 3 cm. long, planted horizontally in pots in a greenhouse. Good percentage.

Take the cutting, dip it into some root hormone, being careful not to coat it too much and plant it into the training pot filled with sand. Now place it in a sunny position and water regularly.

Plant your cuttings into four inch (ten cm.) plastic training pots for a summer of growth in a bright sunny window. They were tip pinched occasionally to promote bushiness and watered well (they need good drainage but cannot be allowed to become dry).

3. Grow from cuttings. If you use this method it has the advantage that the tree will look exactly like the parent plant. Cuttings should be taken in different seasons depending on the type of tree.

PROPAGATE BY CUTTINGS, GRAFTING. I have been into Bonsai for about 3 years. At first, I collected from the wild and bought nursery stock from greenhouses, Lowe's etc.

Bonsai can be created by cutting back and training regularly, they can also be created by neglect and starvation, however a starved plant will not live for ever and will not look very attractive.

Normally the age of a tree can be reasonably estimated when a tree has been owned by the same person who propagated it from seed or a cutting; nursery stock can often be estimated reliably at being 2 or 3 years old when bought from a garden centre.

The cutting-off-short method is preferable to plucking because new buds often form at the base two or three year needle fascicles. If you use the plucking method, pull the needles off in the direction of the branch tip.

One of the primary ways most Bonsai are started is by taking a cutting of a branch from a mature tree or shrub.

The cutting blades are small enough to snip tiny buds accurately while the handles are large enough to fit the hand comfortably. The spherical knob cutter has a circular head to trim any trunk knobs that appear.

We decide what is the appropriate level of cutting to support our root pruning. Was it a light 1/3 and then back into the same pot? A pinching of tips, or pruning off some leaves would do fine.

The idea of cutting back is to maintain horizontal branching with `pads` of leaves to imitate mature trees with heavy solid branches being pulled down by the weight of the leaves. Regular and correct branch cutting also reduces the size of the leaf.

This juniper was planted as a cutting 25 to 30 years ago. It has been carefully cultivated since that time, so its beauty can be fully appreciated.

All the known major weapons had their cutting or piercing parts made of bronze. The metal was not widely used for agricultural implements.

Cutting the stalks down in general will help to reduce the size of the plant. New stalks should appear almost immediately, although it is wise to leave a stalk or two uncut for good measure.

Bonsai can also be started from cuttings. Make cuttings in late spring before the buds open. Some plants that propagate easily from cuttings are olive, willow, cotoneaster, firethorn, azalea, and boxwood.

As with all bonsai cutting tools, a sharp edge should be maintained in order to cleanly cut through branches and not smash them. Clean cuts help to promote healing and reduce the chances of disease on the freshly cut surface.

Also using a sharp root cutting tool will make clean cuts and speed the healing process. Trimmed roots are not able to absorb nutrition immediately after repotting.
