Making a Dai for a Suiseki by JL Doggett It is becoming increasingly common in the West to see Suiseki, or viewing stones, being collected and displayed independent of and alongside bonsai.
Within the Shakan style there are several sub-styles, these include Dai-Shakan and Chu-Shakan. Each sub-style refers to the route in which the Bonsai branches are trained relative to the slant of the Bonsai trunk.

DAI-SHAKAN. The first branch is placed in front and spread to both sides of the trunk, and yet, it does not pierce the eyes. SHAKAN KOBOKU. Slant style-old stocky trunk. Canyon live oak (golden cup oak). Quercus chrysolepis Liebmann.
