Dwarf Cultivars

Naturally Dwarfed Trees The source and inspiration of the art of bonsai are the naturally occurring dwarf trees.

The bonsai are dwarfed by pruning roots and branches. Their shapes are controlled by wiring the trunk and branches. The wires must be removed before the bark becomes scarred.

It is the art of dwarfing trees by careful root and stem pruning coupled with root restriction.

The Bonsai is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an appealing shape by growing, pruning and training those in containers according to prescribed techniques.

The basic principle behind the art is that certain types of trees can be dwarfed by growing them in small flat containers. The process involves years of patience and regularly pruning and shaping them to take on a distinctive miniturised form.

Branches above the hill are dwarfed, slanting away from the wind, to either side of the viewer, while those below the top of the hill are less exposed and growing outward over the water or lower part of the hill.

Specialty nurseries often have a wide selection of dwarf and semidwarf varieties of many species. Dwarf plants, however, do not always convey the same impression as their full size counterparts because their growth habits are quite different.

Select individual plants for their dwarf characteristics and avoid using fast-growing varieties. Generally speaking, most saikei material needs to be smaller, younger, and more delicately shaped than bonsai material.

The Japanese Crimson Queen maple is a dwarf variety reaching heights of up to ten feet. This makes for a good maple bonsai tree when pruned to a smaller size.

Poncirus trifoliata is used as a dwarfing under-stock for Citrus (orange); Pyrus (pear) is grafted on Cydonia (quince) as a dwarfing under-stock; a number of Cotoneaster species have been grafted to Pyrus (pear) arid Crataegus (hawthorn).

A bonsai is not a genetically dwarfed plant. It is kept small by shaping and root pruning. It is claimed that a properly maintained bonsai can outlive a full size tree of the same species.

Records show Indian herbalists keeping prized plants dwarfed in containers to increase their mobility 1500 years back. But bonsai as we know it shows up in Chinese history around 700AD in the Tang dynasty (again in tomb paintings).

Native to tropical and semitropical arid regions around the globe, many species are naturally small or undergo "dwarfing" in the wild due to harsh conditions.

Bonsai are not genetically different, that is to say they are NOT dwarf versions of a species. Take a Scots Pine bonsai out of a pot, put it in the ground and hang around for a hundred years and see what happens!.

Dwarf trees are often found in a natural environment, but in bonsai this environment is provided artificially. Bonsai are grown in shallow containers the size of which determines the amount of soil the roots are able to grow in.

Amongst the other bonsai trees were a 25 year old dwarf Japanese quince, a 45 year old cork-bark Chinese elm and a 90 year old English yew.

With normally full-sized trees and shrubs being dwarfed, bonsai artists create miniatures that suggest great age and resemble the nature.

Whether this was intended as a positive or negative statement, it leaves us to believe that growing dwarfed and twisted trees in containers was an accepted practice among the upper class of Japan by the Kamakura period.

Bonsai, as an art form, stems from ancient oriental culture. It originated in China and was developed by the Japanese. In the 13th century, the Japanese collected and potted wild trees that had been dwarfed by nature.

Bonsai are in general ordinary trees unless they have a prefix of Yatsubusa or dwarf. With careful management watering and feeding leaves will reduce in size.
