Description: The mastic tree, also known as the lentisc, is an dense irregular evergreen shrub or tree, usually low (4.5 - 7.5 meters) and spreading (4.5 - 7.5 meters) but which can sometimes grow as high as 8 meters.

Evergreens should be pruned when their growth is at its minimum, that is when temperature drops down to 4 or 5 degrees Celsius.

Evergreens: Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora), Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi (L. leptolepis)), Hi-noki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), and such conifers as are grown in nurseries for ordinary garden purposes or for forest plantations.

Evergreen Bonsai Trees
Among the most popular plants is the dwarf Juniper from Japan. This is the plant that comes to mind when most people think of bonsai. The trees are hardy and tolerate adverse conditions.

EVERGREEN A plant that remains in leaf all year. It should be noted that evergreen trees slowly shed their oldest leaves at certain times of the year (depending on species) as they are replaced by new growth.

Evergreens
Evergreens need a winter cold but above freezing indoors, or, if native, stored in their pots sunk to above the rim in the ground and well mulched too survive. They will not survive as houseplants.

Evergreen : "Evergreen" refers to trees that normally retain most of their foliage (needles) through the winter. Pine and juniper are examples.

Dormant Evergreens?
"But my plant is an evergreen; it doesn't drop its leaves so it's not going dormant." Au contraire, mon ami, the fact that it is an evergreen plant makes the dormant period even more crucial.

Evergreen bonsai trees maintain their foliage throughout the season changes. Evergreen bonsai types include Junipers, Boxwoods, most Pines, and Azalea, to name a few.

Evergreen trees and tropicals don't lose all their leaves at one time like deciduous trees. They do partially replace their needles and leaves during the growth cycle. They have different levels of dormancy than we see on deciduous trees.

Evergreen - Trees that keep their foliage throughout the year. These are mostly conifers.
Fertilizer - An organic or inorganic substance that provides nutrients to the tree.
First branch - The lowest main branch on a tree.

Both evergreen and deciduous trees known for their highly coloured foliage follow the norms, with almost any vibrant colour looking well in green, red-leafed trees looking well in white, and yellow and orange looking well in blue containers.

With evergreens use your fingers to hold the foliage and then pinch out the new growth. If you use scissors the tips will turn brown.

That an evergreen tree, such as a pine (black, white, red, scots pine, etc.) does not keep its needles for-ever.

Shohaku - evergreens.
Zouki - deciduous - for the changing of the leaves during the seasons.
Hanamono - for the flowers.
Mimono - for the fruit ...

For a more "evergreen" look, Chamaecyparis and Cupressus also grow well year around under cool white fluorescent light.

Bonsai are repotted while the tree is dormant, this reduces the stress on the tree as it does not have to supply water and nutrients to its leaves or in the case of evergreens, and the supply of nutrients from the roots is minimum.

Deciduous trees can only be transplanted when dormant, usually in June or July (in Southern Hemisphere), while all evergreens and conifers can be moved very easily at any time of the year.
When a tree is dormant, root pruning can be much more severe.

Whether your outdoor bonsai tree is an evergreen or deciduous tree, extra care has to be taken in the winter months. An ordinary outdoor tree has its roots protected by the soil.

For evergreens, air layering is best allowed to start a little later, from April to July. Timing the air layering at the point at which the trees are experiencing vigorous growth is a great way to ensure rapid rood growth on the air layered branch.

Fertilize broad-leafed evergreens when new buds and growth appear in April. Apply small amounts of liquid fertilizer twice a month. Do not fertilize for two months after transplanting or repotting.

For deciduous trees, air-layering should be carried out in late spring just as the new leaf growth is beginning to harden off. Evergreens should be left until a little later.

For example, junipers can be repotted at any time during the growing season because they grow throughout it. Pines and most other evergreens must be repotted during the late winter before they show signs of new growth.
