The bark roughens and cracks nicely, and exposed roots soon take on the rough bark texture of the trunk.

- Repot your bonsai out of the sun; exposed roots will dry out very quickly in the sun or wind. I always keep a water bottle handy to mist the roots as I work.

All styles, except formal upright and exposed roots, may be used. But employ no jin or shari because the wood cracks and decays quickly.

Any exposed roots should balance the trunk, and as in the slanting style, the stronger roots are to spread in the opposite direction to the slant of the tree and the others compacted under the slant.

The foliage mass should be kept fairly small so that its weight or wind resistance doesn't cause the exposed roots to bend over.

("Cauliflora" means that it flowers and bears fruit on the trunk, mature branches and exposed roots.) It is a relative of the guava and true myrtle.

Any plant grown in such a small pot is highly vulnerable because its root ball is so limited. Because such small, exposed roots dry out instantly, many require watering every day.

After about two months, the plastic is removed from the top a little at a time, revealing exposed roots. As the roots grow downward, the uppermost roots do not need to be in soil.

The digging is simple, since the clay contributes to a tight root ball. The old, exposed roots, when cut and treated with hormone and treated as a green stick cutting, sprout feeder roots right away.

The nylon is a bit difficult to tie and get tight but it is good because it is strong and not too visible from a distance. You must be careful that whatever you use does not start to cut into any exposed roots or the trunk of your tree.

Anchor the roots to the rock with the glued copper wires, but be careful not to damage the fragile roots (see photo 2).
