First branch

Bonsai FirethornFlowering quince

The first branch on the right was too low and too thick relative to the trunk; its movement was counter to the trunk line and lacked the dramatic movement of the trunk. It was quickly removed and the raw stub was chiseled back to the trunk line.

First branch: Your first branch in most cases will be the first of lowest branches on the tree. Keep in mind that your first branch will also be in the first third of the overall height in your design.

First branch is at approximately 1/3 the desired finished height
Second branch is at approximately 1/3 the distance from the first branch to the finished height ...

First branch - The lowest main branch on a tree.
Foliar feeding - Fertilizing by spraying a liquid fertilizer on the tree's foliage.
Fungicide - A substance used to control or eradicate fungal diseases.

The first branch of this Hawthorn required some movement to be added to break up the long, straight section and to bring down the tip of the branch.

The first branch should be the thickest with the branches thinning in diameter as they progress towards the apex.
The first branch should normally point towards the left or the right when the tree is viewed from the front.

SHO-SHAKAN. The first branch is placed on the slanted side of the trunk, with the branches on one side slightly upwards, and on the other side slightly downwards.
SHO-SHAKAN. The first branch is placed in the opposite direction of the slant.

To achieve an effective formal upright, make sure that about one third of the trunk is visible from the front, either from the base to the first branch or cumulatively, as seen through the tracery of its branches.

The shape of the trunk between the roots and the first branch ("ichi-no-
eda") most prominently displays the tree's characteristics. This part of the
tree is called "tachiagari".

To achieve the perfect formal upright, about one third of the trunk is to be visible from the front, either from the base to the first branch or as a whole from base to apex. The placement of branches follows a general pattern.

Apply by sticking the wire into the soil at the base of the trunk and winding it up the tree to the first branch at a 45° angle.

The trunk above the first branch, about 8 feet up, was a lot more interesting, and had an attractive, ready made branch structure as well.

The first branch, the lowest to the left or right, should be about 1/3 of the way up the trunk. This branch should be definitely the thickest. In most styles of bonsai the trunk and branches should have a graceful curve.

What you can not see is the scar goes all the way up to almost the first branch on that side. You can just make out new roots developing under the first branch on the right hand side.

Start with wrapping the wire around the trunk and proceed with the first branch. Wire from the base of the branch to the very tip before starting to wire the other branch.

It’s worth noting that with the Shakan Bonsai technique the first branch is intentionally designed to face away from the direction of the Bonsai trunk. Thereby, installing a visual symmetry which is highly critical to the Bonsai artist.

Tree with high waist. The distance between the base of the tree and the first branch is too long.

It also needs the first branch to be the biggest and coming from one side. I'll add a jin (I know bonsai have jin, I've seen them). I have a dremmel, so I'll create a shari so I can carve the trunk (I've seen that in bonsai too).

The first metre of the trunk was devoid of any branching, so in the early summer of 2003 I reduced the top of the tree to the first branch and two leaf sets.

In a formal upright style, the trunk is kept very straight and the tree has a very balanced distribution of branches. The first branch should be the most developed and should be positioned roughly at one-third the height of the tree.

The eye moves up the trunk, following a meandering course to the first branch and the subsequent branches to the crown of the tree, where the fine ramification of the branches forms a halo.

Smaller branches nearer the base should be trimmed off, and others should be balanced around the trunk. The first branch starts at about one-third up the total height of the trunk.

Tachiagari : Movement of the trunk that goes from the rootbase (nebari) up to the first branch.

A common term used in Bonsai is sacrifice branches, these are the first branches on your bonsai or particular branches used to allow the stems to thicken and are then removed to allow new smaller branches to take its place.

In-ground cold frames, unheated garages, porches, and the like are commonly used, or mulching the plant in its container up to the depth of the first branch or burying them with the root system below the frost line.

The goal is to develop a sense of balance, but not strict symmetry. The first branch should be the most developed and should be positioned roughly a third the height of the tree. This style is best suited to conifers.
