American gardeners have taken bonsai concepts and applied them to house plants. By combining traditional procedures for handling house plants with bonsai concepts of design, growers have created different bonsai styles.

For every gardener with a bonsai there are a million others who desire one. But this can be a daunting world because there are true bonsai trees and quasi-bonsais. A quasi is simply a shrub pruned into a bonsai shape and stuffed into a small pot.

Special Bonsai fertilizers should always be used at the recommended dose, but houseplant and garden fertilizers are best used at half strength, but twice as often.
Care should be taken with fertilizers; always water well beforehand.

The Bonsai Exhibition Garden
The Arboretum’s bonsai are displayed in a uniquely designed garden setting. Opened to the public in October of 2005, the Bonsai Exhibition Garden was the culmination of a three-year design process.

Today, bonsai are sold in department stores, garden centers, nurseries and many others places. However, most of these are young cuttings or starts and not the true bonsai produced by bonsai masters.

This tree is modelled on a Banksia growing in a garden near the cliff tops at Avalon, NSW. I was struck by its heavy lowest branch sweeping down to the ground then growing upwards at the tip.

A bonsai gardener prunes the roots and the new growth seasonally or annually to induce the dwarfing of the plant.

There's a lot of information about bonsai gardening, but most of it is aimed at individuals who already have a grasp on basic bonsai terminology and techniques.

At first, the Japanese used miniaturized trees grown in containers to decorate their homes and gardens. During the Tokugawa period, landscape gardening attained new importance.

There are many different varieties including Japanese Garden Junipers, Green Mound, Sargent's, Needle, Shimpaku, and Chinese Junipers, just to name a few. Junipers are also one of the easiest forms of bonsai to take care of.

There are many varieties of plants that do well as an indoor bonsai such as ficus, aralia, azalea norfolk pine, serissa, gardenia, or boxwood. Note that these are all woody-stemmed plants and can have their limbs wired to direct the growth.

Bonsai soil is different from regular garden soil. Garden soils are too dense and the do not offer the right kind of water retention, draining and aeration that a bonsai needs.

Enter the Royal Horticulture Society, Kew Garden, London. Depending on whether the "lumpers" or the "splitters" are in ascendance this year, each "new" species is named and catalogued.
