Germination
In order for bonsai seeds to germinate, they have to be properly taken care of to ensure that they remain fresh. All seeds should be stored in a refrigerator until they are ready to be planted.
Germination: Is the process by which a bonsai seeds leaves the dormant state starts into growth, developing roots and shoots.
AFTER GERMINATION
Germination indoors can take 2 to 4 weeks though it is advisable to be patient and if germination fails within this time, do not discard the seed.
Germination is erratic, from a few days to several weeks. Hybrids or cultivars very seldom come true from seed, you will have many variations of the parent plant, some completely different.
Seed germination can be aided by overwintering in damp leaf litter, or by refrigeration. Seeds should be planted in winter in a normal standard well-drained seed-raising mix or light potting mix - it is suprisingly not that hard to grow Jap.
Seed: For best germination, keep seed moist at 4-5ºF for 2 months before sowing.

The chemical reactions that take place to break down some of the germination inhibitors are quite unusual in that they require moisture and temperature within a specific range, not colder or hotter.

After germination, seedlings must grow quickly to escape floodwaters; they often reach a height of 20-75 cm (up to 100 cm in fertilized nursery conditions) in their first year. Seedlings die if inundated for more than about two to four weeks.

Propagation: Black pines may also be grown from seeds sown in sand in early April. Seeds should be soaked in water for two days to hasten germination. Be sure to discard any seeds which are floating in the water.
Bonsai Glossary: stratify - Natural process whereby seeds are exposed to freezing and thawing during winter, encouraging germination. These conditions can also be recreated artificially using a refrigerator or freezer.
So I took him up on the offer and brought some home with me. He said he had used his own method to ensure that they were ready for germination and would not be sharing the secret!

I will not discuss growing from seed except to say the seed is very fine and can be placed on moistened chopped sphagnum moss and kept in a moist environment until germination occurs.
After it has been thoroughly watered with a sprinkling can, the pan should be placed under a tree or in some other place shaded from the direct sun; on rainy days it should be moved under a roof. Germination takes three to four weeks.
