Grafting
Grafting is not a subject I would normally advise you to get involved in. The reason for producing a grafted tree is to impart the growth characteristics of the root stock onto the scion.

Grafting and air layering. These are more advanced techniques and require some skill so may not be ideal for those starting out in bonsai.

You may begin grafting on deciduous trees as well as pines and conifers. The best months for grafting conifers are January and February. In general, February to early March is the best time to transplant, replant or change soil.

Bonsai cultivators acquire these trees in different ways - either by using methods such as cuttings, air layering, and grafting which utilize already existing trees, or by purchasing seeds for planting.

These include inverse taper of the trunk, ugly grafts, one-sided or non-existent surface roots and branches that are too thick.

A technique that works well is the "grafting technique". This is where you tie a group of rooted cuttings together (often very thin branches) and allow them to fuse, creating one thick trunk.

Pruning:
Whenever pruning is done on any smooth-bark tree, make clean cuts with a grafting knife or sharp chisel to promote healing and seal all cuts 1/8" or larger with a good putty-type sealer.

Misho-karin (Chinese quince)
We named "Misho-karin" raised from the seed. We are calling the tree which did grafting "To-karin". Of course it is "Misho-karin" if we sow this "To-karin". Sorting is vague.

Somebody started that tree by grafting shoots on a trunk with the intention of growing it as a bonsai. It would be interesting to know if they had any idea that it would still be living centuries after that, long after they themselves had died.

Some plants that propagate easily from cuttings are olive, willow, cotoneaster, firethorn, azalea, and boxwood. Plants can also be propagated by layering and grafting, but these methods are not recommended for the beginner.

Grafts take time. Ramification takes time. Wire will require time to set the wood. Compact foliage takes time. Reduction of leaf size takes time. As you see every technique I just commented on takes time.
