G graft - to join a stem of one plant with another so they grow together. Grafting is used both to propagate plant species and to add foliage where none previously existed on a bonsai.

For propagation work, the two general types of knives used are the budding knife and grafting knife (Fig. 1).The knives have either a fixed or folding blade, with the fixed blade stronger and longer lasting.

Use a cutter and then the grafting knife to reduce the wound to the shape shown here. The rounded gouge can be used to create a channel around the interior perimeter of the wound so that the callus starts by rolling into the wound.

Pruning:
Whenever pruning is done on any smooth-bark tree, make clean cuts with a grafting knife or sharp chisel to promote healing and seal all cuts 1/8" or larger with a good putty-type sealer.
