Group Planting
The fact that I am so behind at getting this out has worked somewhat in our favor as I can show you a one month on photo at the end of the series that would otherwise have had to wait.

 


Group plantings are usually composed of one species only as this creates a more natural look and is far easier to style successfully.

A "grouped planting" is the creation of a scene through plating multiple trees in one container.

Group plants together, but not touching one another. Allow room for good air circulation.

A group planting of distinct separate trees, representing a grove, or forest.

A group or forest bonsai display is, as the name suggests, a number of bonsai (typically an odd number if there are three or more trees) placed together in a pot.

A group planting using trees as well as rocks, mosses and other plants to create the appearance of a landscape.

The group or forest style, or Yose Ue, comprises a planting of more than one tree (typically an odd number if there are three or more trees, and essentially never 4 because of its significance in China) in a bonsai pot.

Forest Group plantings imitating small clumps of trees groups where each one of them grows as independent trees and competing with each other for its own light and space.

I find groups of three to be very challenging, for me it is easier to work with larger numbers. Even in small six inch pots I prefer to work with seven trees.

A small group planting can represent an island, or an entire forest. A single tree can represent a huge, lonely, old tree the moss covered dirt beneath, a vast meadow or the vegetation of a forest floor.

The first group consisting of experienced bonsaists did not all select a single front. Instead the selections were about evenly distributed toward three of the six views presented, but no view went unselected as the front.

Group plantings are denoted by how many trunks are in the planting. Sambon-Yõse (3 trunks), Gohon-Yõse (5), Nanahon-Yõse (7) and Kyuhon-Yõse (9) are the usual groupings.

We try to make this group of trees look like a forest. We hint at what is not really there. The vastness of the forest is merely suggested.

Genus - a unit of classification for a group of closely related plants.

Accessory plant or planting - This term refers to additional plants within the confines of the bonsai pot as underplanting for the tree or trees, especially in larger group or Saikei plantings.

The group was created during a demonstration approximately 5 years ago, and is designed to be viewed from either side.

Another group of growth regulators, cytokinins, do the opposite. They stimulate side branching and back budding with slower growth. Auxin is the dominant growth regulator.

The lowest branches are grouped in threes, and this grouping begins one-third of the way up the trunk. The bottom-most three branches almost encircle the trunk, with two branches thrusting forward, one slightly higher than the other.

As it begins to grow, any buds that appear below that top group of buds are picked off to keep the single stem tree form. That's all there is to it. You can use almost anything as a stake, and just tie the stem to the stake with a piece of cloth.

Larch are one of the unusual group of 'decidious' conifers. There are two species of larch you may come across, either as a trained bonsai, or Garden center stock, they are the European and Japanese larches, difficult to tell apart, ...

Consider each of your planted bonsai trees, or group of trees, as an artistic composition and choose the container accordingly.

Two other styles of bonsai mentioned include the literati and group/forest. In the first case, you have small amounts of branches, which are trained high up on contorted or twisted trunk.

Now we come to the second group, the trees brought from natural habitats. From mountains and ragged woods, a tremendous amount of material is dug and brought to the training beds of dwarfed potted trees specialists each year.

There is another way to create a group of trees, to resemble what would happen in nature. Rarely do you find an assortment of different trees together in a group. Almost always, there will be clusters of like trees together.

However, some modern sectors of society especially those groups of women who are of Chinese descendants object to the art of bonsai making. According to these women, bonsai making is so much like the bonding of the feet of women in ancient China.

Forest Planting:
As it's name a group of trees in a form that looks likes a small coppice. Always plant in odd numbers and not less than 3. Always has a dominant tree and the others generally slopping away so in silhouette forms a mound.

The group or forest style features more than one tree, usually an odd number, grown in the same pot. Most often, they are the smallest of bonsai and all of the same variety. There is much more to the old bonsai tree art than just cute little trees.

Canopy - The foliage that makes up the outer and upper parts of a tree, or group of trees.
Collected tree - A tree collected from the wild and transplanted into a bonsai pot.

Some of the other styles that can be applied are twin trunk, root over rock, clasped to rock, group, broom, literati, windswept and exposed root.

Y: Yamadori - Japanese term for a tree collected from the wild mountain, or a tree with that appearance.
