Hi, I'm growing my first Bansai from seed (pic attached). Seems to be going well but I am just trying to figure out the basics. Can you tell the species from the pic?

 


Growing from Seed
Unless you live in the tropics seeds of figs are relatively unavailable. Figs grown in the north and indoors will not have viable seed. Viable seed requires the fig to be fertilized by its own parasitic fig wasp.

3) Growing from seed to nurture and rear.
Extreme patient's is a virtue when it comes to this method. It will take a few years before your seedling is developed enough to begin any work on it.

Seed can be very easily obtained from many species of tree that can be found growing in fields, gardens and by the roadside.

Growing from seed has many advantages over other methods. The greatest being the root selection available, and the timing of that selection that can be achieved only with seedling. Once this is accomplished, building up can begin in earnest.

When growing from seeds, you would find it very rewarding, starting with nothing and turning it into a magnificent piece of art. Using cuttings can take some time to mature but is also rewarding.

When growing from seeds, the best time to plant it is in autumn, when the seed has stratified or ripened. Air layering is easily achieved with this plant. Best time is late spring. For cuttings, softwood cuttings are best taken in the summer.

Growing from seed gives you more control over the end result, but has inherent in it all the problems associated with raising anything else from seed, such as damping off, drying out, heavy footed pets and fluctuating conditions.

Herb seeds should be easy to find, from seed catalogues if not locally. Growing from seed will give you the opportunity to experiment quite inexpensively, and is an interesting hobby in itself.
