Whether growing a plant yourself from a cutting or puchasing a plant from a nursery, always grow-it-on until it fills a 5 inch pot, the growing tips should have been pinched out at least once.

The hardy juniper can grow on mountains
Juniper is a popular bonsai tree. There are more than 50 species of this evergreen shrub and they are frequently found on hillsides and mountains.

Very hardy, to around USDA Zone 3. I am not familiar with this Larch species but am assured that it is regarded in the US as being superior to other Larch species.

It is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 5-9, and prefers moist soils. It is considered shade tolerant, but will flower only when exposed to partial or full sun.

They are hardy and quick growing a very nice looking tree can be achieved in only three years from a cutting.

Yews are cold hardy and used extensively in our area for landscaping. The best way to secure bonsai material is to rescue a plant from an older home that is being re-landscaped, or buy one from a nursery.

Temperature: Hardy in zones 10B through 11. Ficus are tropical, and require temperatures above 55F. An excellent choice for an indoor bonsai. Indoor Ficus appreciate being brought outdooors during summer. Does not like draughts.

Dawn redwoods are hardy from zone 5 to zone 8. They will winter over well up here in Wisconsin (zone 4 and 5) with ample protection from the harsh wind.

Considered a very hardy conifer, the Juniper is a non-flowering tree that makes a great choice for bonsai because of it is so easy to prune and train.

The trident bonsai plant is highly tolerant to pollution and can resist great abuse in terms on impure air and even lack of water since its roots capture and collects water for long time usage.

You need to understand that many Bonsai are outdoor trees (hardy) and while some can tolerate being kept indoors (tropicals) for a period of time, they will eventually weaken and die.

I will also mention that they will take some work to keep them looking good because they are very hardy growers once they get going, and you will need to keep at them in order to keep them looking like trees in a pot, and not a shrub in a pot.
