Hinoki Cypress at MABS
In this photo series, renowned bonsai artist Craig Coussins styles a Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) at the Mid-Atlantic Bonsai Societies Spring Convention, April 2004.

Dwarf Hinoki Cypress
Description: A slow-growing conifer with distinctive tiny fans of golden foliage on a somewhat irregular-shaped bush. Its ideal for a small garden or rockery or patio where it can be grown on in pots for many years.

Hinoki
Hinokis are well suited to dryer climates. They are reasonably drought tolerant and demand less water than other Cypresses. However, like all Bonsai, try not to let your tree dry out.

Hinoki (or False) Cypress - Chamaecyparis sp.
General Information: This broad, sweeping, conical-shaped evergreen has graceful, flattened, fern-like branchlets which gently droop at branch tips.

HINOKI CYPRESS (Chamaecyparis sp.)
Also known as, the False Cypress, this evergreen conifer displays flat, deep green foliage that fans out beautifully.

HINOKI CYPRESS. I had a "varigated dwarf" version of this species. Wire training is nearly impossible since the foliage is scale-like and tends to crumble in your hands when you are working on the branches.

Hinoki (and Sugi) pollen is a major cause of hay fever in Japan.
[edit] Cultivars ...

This little Hinoki cutting was stuck in late July. This is it's 'baby picture' in mid October. Not a bad bundle of roots for 2 1/2 months of almost no care except to check for the right amout of moisture in the boxes... eh?

Favourite Bonsai - Hinoki Cypress
Last weekend the ‘Joy of Bonsai' event was held in Bath in the U.K. It was a great weekend with a fantastic mix of activities and demonstrations.

Shohaku includes Kuro-matsu(Pinus thunbergii), Aka-matsu(Pinus densiflora), Goyo-matsu(Piuns parviflora), Shimpaku(Juniperus chinensis ver, sargentii), Ichii(Taxus cuspidata), Tosho(Juniperus rigida), Hinoki(Chamaecyparis obtusa), etc.

It is similar to the foliage of Hinoki cypress but not as tight. On the other hand, it is not as curly. Fronds will grow every which way, and the view of regular cedar foliage can be daunting for the cedar novice (figure 3).

There are some plants that put out new growth continuously throughout spring and summer, such as Juniper and Hinoki Cypress, and some that only put out new growth in the spring, such as Beech and Euonymous.
