Holly Bonsai Trees

ILEX CRENATA/ Japanese Evergreen Holly
Ilex crenata is an evergreen shrub or small tree with minutely scalloped dark-green leaves upto 2-3cm long and fine twiggy growth.

Japanese Holly
Description: Japanese holly, box-leafed holly - an evergreen shrub that gets its name from its leaves, which cause it to be sometimes mistaken for box. It has small dense green shiny leaves and produces small black shiny fruits.

HOLLY (Ilex)
When talking about Ilex, remember there are more than 400 species within this deciduous and evergreen tree family. Some are even categorized as climbers and shrubs from various regions to include tropical and subtropical.

Yaupon holly is a native of North America. They are excellent to work with and will make quality medium and shohin size bonsai. They bud back readily on old wood.

OKINAWA HOLLY. My first Bonsai. It has good character and looks. And took me an hour to pick the right out at the nursery. Nice foilage and structure, relatively easy indoor care for a beginner.

I used Yaupon Holly and Fukien Tea for the trees accented with clumps of mondo grass and liverwort, the rocks are fresh water corals found in a local river which have a texture similar to volcanic rock.

Four woody species were used: seedlings of Austrian Pine and Mugo Pine, and rooted cuttings of Japanese Garden Juniper and Chinese Holly. Roots were examined, counted, and graded before the study and after 6, 12, and 18 days.

Natural insecticides are made from NEEM, ginger, turmeric, onion, garlic, tobacco leaves or holly basil extracts. Even cow urine has been prepared as an insecticide! ...

They include Satsuki Azalea, Cotoneaster, Winter Jasmine, Crab Apple, Flowering Cherry, Wisteria, Serissa, Firethorn, Deciduous Holly, Quince, White and Red Hawthorn, Japanese Flowering Apricot and Pomegranate.

My own examples of this adaptation are Japanese maples, Winter's Gem boxwood and (the worst) Stokes holly. Although the adaptation (Stokes) took two full seasons, leaf browing has stopped on all (summer) and they are showing very full compact growth.

Okinawa Holly - This has small pink flowers that bloom during spring and summer. It is tough, but grows best in temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees.
