Internode length is also influenced by the season and growth rate. Recently repotted plants will form longer internodes. Plants heavily fertilized in the spring, or pruned in the winter will also form longer internodes.

This technique can still be used for new shoots that are being allowed to extend to create new branches. As a bud opens into a new shoot, it will unfurl its new leaves before extending fully.
