Introduction
Recently on the internet I was asked what is the best Japanese Maple, Acer palmatum, cultivar for bonsai? This is a really tough one to answer.

Japanese Maple
Description: A small hardy deciduous tree slow growing trees ideal for containers or smaller gardens and naturally a long loved choice of Bonsai artists.

Description : The Japanese maple is the most widely grown maple in gardens and is a perfect subject for bonsai.

Japanese Maple Cultivars
There is much variation in the height and spread of the different Japanese Maple cultivars. Leaf size varies greatly but in all varieties produces vibrant spring and autumn colouring.

Another reason why the Japanese maple bonsai is a good choice for beginners is that this is a hardy species that can survive a few mistakes.

Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum
General Information: This maple is native to China and Japan. Its botanical name comes from its leaves, which have 5 or more deep lobes and vaguely resemble a human hand. It is a popular bonsai subject in Japan.

Grown primarily in gardens, the Japanese Maple is a great species for bonsai.

Japanese Maple has been grown in temperate areas around the world since the 19th century and has been cultivated in Japan for centuries.[3].

Most Japanese Maple seeds ripen in the fall. Watch the tree and wait for the seeds to turn brown. The seeds are ready to be harvested when they are brown and can be easily removed from the tree.

Propagating Japanese Maples For Bonsai
There are three methods one can use to propagate Japanese Maples. These methods are growing from seed, air layering and by rooting cuttings. Japanese Maple seeds need to go through a stratifying process.

The Japanese didn't use Japanese maples, and expect everyone who wanted a maple as a bonsai to use a Japanese maple, because there was something inherently better about them. They used Japanese maples because they were there! ...
