Junipers are one of the most popular forms of bonsai. There are many different varieties including Japanese Garden Junipers, Green Mound, Sargent's, Needle, Shimpaku, and Chinese Junipers, just to name a few.
Junipers generally have long, trailing branches and are able to be trained into many fantastic bonsai styles - all except broom.
Junipers are probably the easiest of the genus for the beginner. All of the species will make good bonsai, but particularly Chinensis (illustrated) Pfitzerania and its sub species, and for a somewhat 'spikier' tree Squamata.
This juniper tree was collected by Mr. Fukuji Suzuki, a well-known professional plant gatherer, in 1993. It was found in the "Itoigawa" mountainous area, which used to be famous for producing the best quality of juniper in Japan.
Remember, the juniper needs to go into dormancy even if it considered an indoor plant. During its dormancy period, make sure there is some light getting to the tree, as it will die in total darkness.
