5-15 cm long, lanceolate to oblong, falcate (sickle-shaped) in some species, with a distinct midrib, and are arranged spirally, though in some species twisted to appear in two horizontal ranks.
These plants usually grow on rocky exposed ground in northern and central Japan, at higher elevations in places where there is not enough soil to support trees or other vegetation. They usually have narrow lanceolate leaves.
The leaves too are pleasingly small and lanceolate, and greatly contribute to the overall suggestion of a small-scale tree. A well-developed specimen is extremely convincing, and can be trained to look like a single, twisting-trunk upright tree.
