Leaf pruning guidelines:
correct timing is a vital factor and early summer is ideal. Do not leaf prune after this time or the tree may not re-leaf
cut off leaves so that the leaf stalk is left behind.

Leaf Pruning
Leaf Pruning refers to the defoliation of a Bonsai Tree, which is carried out to encourage the growth of much smaller leafs. This is primarily on Deciduous trees just after the first flush of leafs has settled in (Fig P).

Leaf pruning or defoliating plants in good health will result in smaller leaves when they regrow and additionally will produce back budding on many trees.

Leaf pruning (also known as defoliation) in bonsai is used for several deciduous and tropical plants such as ficus or maples to reduce leaf size, remove unsightly leaves and speed-up growth by causing two seasons' growth in one.

Leaf pruning and bud pinching refines the growth of the tree, producing smaller leaves, shorter internodes, and twiggier, finer branches.

Leaf pruning or defoliation is also common for some deciduous trees and bushes, such as a ficus. Carried out in mid-summer, you simply remove half of the leaves with a pair of fine scissors. Leave the stems intact.

Leaf pruning (removal of leaves during the growing season) can be done every other year in early summer to encourage smaller leaves. All of the leaves are removed from the tree, leaving the leaf stems on the branches.

- Leaf pruning or the removal of leaves should be done every second year in early summer, to encourage smaller leaves.

Defoliation: Leaf pruning, whereby some or all of the leaves are removed to encourage new shoots and smaller leaves which can greatly increase ramification.

Some bonsai artists perform leaf pruning to encourage the growth of smaller and daintier leaves.

No leaf pruning, The food storage in the roots, trunk, and branches causes them to thicken. It is best to remove all wires during this time to prevent them from cutting in and scaring the tree.

Finally, leaf pruning is used for both tropical and deciduous plants. This helps reduce the size of the leaves, get rid of unsightly leaves, and encourage growth by creating two growing seasons in one.
