Light Requirements for Dormant Evergreens

Introduction
This article was originally a post to the Internet Bonsai Club Mail List. It has been edited slightly to make it more readable in this context.

Light/Shade Requirements
Full sun will make the bonsai tree more yellow in most cases, while full shade (not advised) will force the glaucus, blue-green colour to come out. Blend the light requirements and you will have a healthy tree.

The purpose of this light is to make sure that the plants are getting enough light, as this is one of the main things that they need to strive.

Ficus bonsai grow well in either direct or indirect sunlight. We prefer to grow Ficus in shady areas, out of the hot afternoon sun.

Lighting and Temperature
Light is another essential part of maintaining a healthy bonsai tree, and your ficus bonsai will grow best in either direct or indirect sunlight, as long as there is a sufficient amount of it.

Light
If you have placed your bonsai inside the house, make sure that it gets sunlight for at least 2-4 hours every day. Your bonsai will flourish if you give it long hours of sunlight.

Lighting techniques
Providing the correct amount of light for your bonsai tree is a very important aspect for keeping it healthy.

Lighting
The jade tree bonsai can grow both indoors or outdoors. While many other species of bonsai trees require the humidity of an outside environment, the jade is a succulent that is more generally adapted to dryer, arid environments.

Natural Light Is Important
Your bonsai thrives on natural light, so place it on or near a window sill during the day (and never more than 3 feet away). At night, you can move it to a table or shelf so that it can still be easily seen and enjoyed.

Lighting And Ventilation
Light and proper ventilation are two of the most important things that you need to remember for bonsai care. Like almost all other types of plants, bonsai plants need light to survive.

Light watering is adequate for most of the year, with slightly more in the hotter season.
Since they do better in filtered sun and moderate shade, they are one of the few bonsai that can, and probably should, be raised indoors.

Light: Full sun helps keep foliage small and compact.
Water: Use sparingly to promote minimal growth.
Fertilizer: Use only enough to keep tree healthy. Generally low in nitrogen.

Light/shade requirements
Pines like some shade for part of the day in the summer and kept in as light an area free from winter climatic problems during the cold months.

Sunlight, especially the ultra-violet ray, affects the growth of trees. Therefore, except in special cases such as immediately after repotting, extensive trimming, etc, bonsai should be placed in a sunny location.

In light of the recent completion of our first annual display contest, we are pleased to present a trio of articles by Morten Albek on display. In this one, Morten gives us the basics for placing Shohin on a stand made for multiple bonsai.

The wood is light, soft, brittle, coarse grained, durable, fragrant, and pale brown in color. It is especially important for making fence posts (which I hope none of you have to do with your bonsai), building poles, rot-resistant lumber, and shingles.

Due to their lightweight and durable nature, bonsai pots made of both mica and plastic are great for bonsai training, as a step towards a smaller pot.

The amount of light a bonsai needs depends on the type of plant. Tropicals have the same requirements as a bonsai that they do under normal conditions.

In the Autumn lightly prune fuchsias, no lower than 18" for the winter period. This stops strong winter winds from loosening your plants, but still leaves enough old growth to protect 'crown' of plant from frost damage.

Tolerates low light - but likes light. Protect from frost and draughts. Keep inside from minimum 15°C (59°F) to 22°C (71°F).

LIGHT: Indoors: Avoid keeping trees closer than twelve inches from windows. The sun radiates through glass and that could scorch the leaves and in extreme cases eventually killing the tree.

Bonsai need light. This one might seem quite obvious to most people but getting the amount of light is crucial to success. As a general rule leafy trees need to be kept in semi-shade and needle trees need to be kept in full sun.

Position and Sunlight
Put your bonsai outdoors.
While they are growing, put them in the sun for 3 to 6 hours per day.
You can do it in the morning or afternoon.

Temperatures and sunlight are gradually decreasing but it is still important that you keep an eye on your watering. We have still had very little rain and it looks like we may be close to our fourth tanker load of water this summer.

Pumice : It's a light-colored volcanic rock containing abundant trapped gas bubbles formed by the explosive eruption of magma. It's often used as a bonsai soil amendment.

Most of today's horticultural oil sprays are lighter and contain fewer of the impurities that made the heavy dormant oils phytotoxic, so they can be used year-round on a variety of plants. These products are called superior, summer or supreme oils.

The Bald Cypress, despite it's very slow growth, is a very popular bonsai tree, grown for its light, feathery foliage and orange-brown fall color.

The recipe for success as an indoor plant is good sunlight (direct) and fresh air movement, additional humidity will also help. Without these factors all but the hardiest of indoor plants are doomed to a bare survival state.

The highlight was the Japanese White Pine placed outside the entrance to the Japanese pavilion. The tree is roughly three hundred seventy five years old, and was in training as a bonsai from the beginning. This tree really enthralled me.
