Lignified

Bonsai LightingLime sulpher

Do not wire while the plant is setting buds, and wire only lignified (wooden) shoots. DO NOT WIRE A BONSAI JUST AFTER REPOTTING. Wind the training wire in the direction the branch is bent in order to keep the wire from loosening.

Over the past 6 years since airlayering the tree, the roots have lignified (the wood has become mature) and have thickened producing a pleasing nebari and trunkbase.

Do not wire while the plant is setting buds, and wire only lignified (mature) shoots. Young plants should be pruned after the shoots have developed 4-6 leaves, trimming back to 2-3 to establish branching.

If the shoot is already lignified and is so hard or strong that you have to try and cut with your nails, you should not pinch. In these cases get your trimming scissors and cut the shoot instead of pinching.

This is usually done to a shoot with several internodes to be removed or with a larger lignified (woody) existing branch. It doesn't matter if you use concave cutters, your fingers, pruners, or chain saw, as long as you do a neat job.

One is that tiny hair roots are still growing, exchanging gases, absorbing nutrients, etc. Secondly, the somewhat larger roots are not yet 'lignified', or woody, and thus are still also fairly active.
