Mame bonsai trees and shohin bonsai trees need to be grown for between three and five years to shape the tree sufficiently to be called as bonsai. We can start with seedlings of 3-5 cm tall.

Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai', or as it is more commonly known, the Fuji Cherry is an excellent subject for bonsai cultivation.

Most plants are suitable for shohin and mame bonsai but the species I mentioned above are really suitable for me. I will answer all mail with questions about shohin and mame bonsai @ a.h.giphart@fd.tudelft.nl.

Ornate pots are more suitable for flowering and fruiting trees or mame bonsai.
The tree should not be planted centrally in the pot except when a round or square pot is used.

Mame: Mame (pronounced "Ma-May") refers to the size of a bonsai. Mame bonsai should ideally be no more than 10cm in height and can be held in the palm of a hand.

This type of bonsai is very common in Japan and China where it is also known as mame bonsai or shonin bonsai. The great thing about these mini bonsai trees is that almost all of them flower and fruit every year offering an amazing spectacle.

These shears are identical to the Regular Duty Bonsai Shears above, but are smaller, for small delicate work. Excellent for work on Mame bonsai, the small handles give a very fine degree of control. These are little gems. Carbon steel. $22.00.

This is a quick way in which your tree can develop with a wide trunk and good strong branches. There are also the styles; Shito and Mame Bonsai, which work well with cuttings and these could even be grown as accompaniments to your main display.
