Moss
Moss is certainly not essential to growing bonsai, but when moss is added to a bonsai it both enhances its beauty and improves moisture retention within the bonsai pot.

Moss
Moss is a small, leafless, soft plant. There are thousands of different kinds. It is usually found in damp, shady spots. However, some varieties grow in full sun.

Having just repotted your tree, you will notice that the whole thing looks a little unnatural, all that fresh soil will not help the impression of an old tree, dressing the surface with moss will add to the impression of age.

MOSS
Moss can be propagated by collecting as much as possible by scraping it with a knife and allowing it to dry out properly. Once completely dry, rub it into a fine dust and store in an airtight jar. It will last for a long time.

Soil, Moss, and Other Bonsai Garden Essentials
In order to have a successful bonsai garden you need to have the best soil possible. It is first important to understand that you should never use garden soil in your bonsai garden.

Moss is not necessary for growing bonsai, but if it is added it can improve moisture retention and enhance its beauty in addition. If a bonsai has moss it can be kept alive by misting it regularly.

The moss on this tree is naturally grown. From re-potting time to fully mossed is about 10 months. As most trees can go for two years between re-potting the moss is by then really lush.

Moss the top of your pot. I collect my own from around the yard, but I am blessed with tons of the stuff. Florists carry sheet moss that will do nicely.

Peat Moss and Nursery Mixes
Peat moss, when used in reasonable quantities of less than ten percent, does not add sufficient small particle volume to affect either drainage or aeration. That is what I really like about it.

Lush green moss will develop naturally if the soil is rich and weather is suitable. But sometimes when I want moss right away, I will just search around and dig some moss up from a garden and transplant it into my bonsai.

Some people think moss is decorative, and will not wish to remove it. If this is the case, at the very least keep it away form the trunk and branches of the tree - using a special spatula, or a hard nylon toothbrush, ...

Underplant with a selection of moss, forming a green 'island' around the base of the tree, but not completely covering the soil. This will create a natural landscaped feeling.

Once the proposed site has been injured, put rooting hormone on the site and then wrap it tightly with wet long-stranded sphagnum moss. Wrap the moss in clear plastic bag to keep it in place.

After the graft is made and tied, a ball of wet sphagnum moss, the size of a lemon, is tied to the rootstock one inch below the union. A plastic bag is then inflated and put over the scion and tied with a rubber strip below the sphagnum moss.

Moss does very well on trees here....in fact I have to use care that some trees do not stay too wet. Even my mame which are sitting on a tray of wet Turface rarely need watering more than once a day.

A small group planting can represent an island, or an entire forest. A single tree can represent a huge, lonely, old tree the moss covered dirt beneath, a vast meadow or the vegetation of a forest floor.

The peat holds water and nutrients whilst the grit provides drainage and keeps the soil open. The peat used is moss peat rather than sedge peat, the grit, either flint grit or crushed granite.

A professional can help you get the mixture just right but the basic recipe for homemade soil is one part loam, two parts sphagnum peat moss, and two parts granite grit.

After air-layering is finished, the pared area is covered spherically by Sphagnum moss and fastened by string to fend off dryness and accelerate rooting.
