Not all fungi are harmful to your trees, all plants have a symbiotic root fungus called Mycorrhiza which benefits the tree.

 


Mycorrhizae are soil fungi found associated with pine roots. These fungi are beneficial to pines and help the pine to receive nourishment on depleted soils.

Mycorrhiza is the symbiotic relationship between the white, powdery fungus that clings to roots, and actually protects a tree's roots from pathogens, increasing moisture and ensuring efficient nutrient absorption.

Many plants are unable to make use of nitrogen in the air directly, but some bacteria, like mycorrhiza, make their way into the roots of living plants and fix nitrogen so that it is then made available to the plant.

When repotting pine trees never remove all the soil; this would remove the mycorrhizal fungus which is essential for the tree's survival.

Australia has a rich variety of endemic legume species that thrive in nutrient-poor soils because of their symbiosis with Rhizobia bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi.

Japanese Black Pine should be repotted every 2 to 5 years in spring. If the beneficial white fungus Mycorrhiza is present ensure some is transferred to the new pot.

Finally, add a handful of medium laden with mycorrhizal fungi per cubic foot of volume. To create a mix that holds moisture longer, increase the amount of organic material or decrease overall particle size.

It is called Mycorrhizae the pine provides a home for the fungus and it in turn helps the tree absorb nutrients and moisture from the soil. Once it is established in your trees it can be transferred when repotting from tree to tree.

Almost all deciduous varieties will tolerate the transition from organic to inorganic soils as long as they are healthy; coniferous species, in particular Pines, benefit from the retention of some of their old soil which will contain mycorrhiza fungi ...

will need to be done with caution so as not to damage the root system and therefore the overall health of the tree. Japanese Black Pines will also need to have the root system worked in such a way so as to not wash out the necessary mycorrhizae.
