Organic Soil Mixes and Components
In past decades, Western bonsai enthusiasts tended to use organic soil mixes, using a large proportion of peat, bark and leaf-litter mixed with grit to aid with drainage.

Organic versus Chemical
Organic
Pro
Less chance of burning
Slower acting, won't bolt the tree

No organic fertilizer was used on any of the trees.
When insects were detected, all the trees received appropriate insect sprays .
The plants were not trimmed or shaped in any way.

II. Organic - Contains Carbon
Natural - (Botanicals)
From Chrysanthemums = pyrethrum
Derris sp. = rotenone
Tobacco = nicotine
Calabar Bean = physotigmine ...

Organic components are included for their ability to hold water and nutrients well. Inorganic components are there to provide excellent aeration and drainage for your bonsai trees.

Organic elements are made up of decomposed plant and animal matter, which provide nitrogen, phosphates and a host of other vital Bonsai nutrients.

Organic - A fertilizer that is not manufactured or synthetic.
pH - A unit of measurement that describes the acid or alkaline level of soil.
Phosphorous - Essential element that promotes root growth. Identified in fertilizers by the letter P ...

- Organic bonsai tree fertilizer contains organic matter such as fish meal or animal manure. A popular one with Japanese artists is rapeseed fertilizer ...

All organic soils have a stock of these vital chemicals; they come from the mineral part of the soil (sands/clays etc) and from dead organic matter (fallen leaves and dead plant matter).

All Inorganic?
Using only stable inorganic components such as lava rock or pumice will create a soil that will last longer than it really needs to last.

Decaying organic material improves the friability and moisture retentiveness of the soil. This organic material is a great source of nutrients for the microorganisms present in the soil and for the trees directly, both as macro and microelements.

Basic or Organic Soil Mix

The basic soil mix for bonsai has, for many years been grit and peat, mixed to a ratio of around 50:50. The peat holds water and nutrients whilst the grit provides drainage and keeps the soil open.

I'll discuss organic control first. The first thing you should do is remove all unwanted vegetation from your planting area. Using a hoe, spade or other digging device, undercut the roots and remove the undesirable plants, roots and all.

Bonsai Organic Solutions: Control with a solution of organic soft soap, spraying under the leaves. When temperature is above 16ºC, 'phytoseiulus', a tiny harmless mite, can be tapped over infected plants.

Feeding: Use and organic feed during the growing season. Hold of on feeding during the hottest of summer months.
Leaf and Branch Pruning: Pinch out shoots as soon as 1 to 2 leaf lets appear on a shoot.

Feeding: Use an organic fertilizer beginning in the early spring and continue until mid-fall. You can supplement with a liquid feed to boost branch ramification.

Loam - a soil mixture comprised of clay, sand and organic matter.
49. Mame - a term used in size classification of bonsai trees; this being a small bonsai.
50. Moyogi - a traditional Japanese bonsai style; also called informal upright.

Bonsai ‘soil' is a mixture of organic and inorganic compounds that provide a
suitable growing media for the cultivation of bonsai trees within the confines
of a bonsai container. A bonsai container or pot is an unnatural and ...

For example, conifers and pines normally do better in a courser mix, whereas deciduous trees prefer a mix with a higher amount of organic material mixed in.

There seems to be a lot of unnecessary controversy in the bonsai world about whether to use "organic" or "chemical" nutrients for bonsai.

And it is perfectly "Organic". The cayenne powder, sprayed onto the surface of the compost in your pots, is also reputed to deter crawling insects or sciarid flies, but I have yet to try this.

Organic (less concentrated, slower acting, complex with other substances, e.g., fish emulsion, bone meal, blood meal) / Inorganic (concentrated, quicker acting, simpler/purer chemicals, e.g. MirAcidŽ or Grow PowerŽ) ...

Bonsai soil is primarily a loose, fast-draining mix of components, usually a mixture of coarse sand or gravel, fired clay pellets, and an organic component such as peat or compost.

Many people, myself included, like to use mainly organic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers are slow release and allow the plant somewhat of a continual feeding this way.

In regards to fertilizers, it is best to use organic products and fertilize in the spring, with a mixture of 0-10-10.

Organic fertilizers such as cottonseed meal, fish emulsion or meal, blood meal, and bone meal are preferable to chemical compounds. Fertilize broad-leafed evergreens when new buds and growth appear in April.

We recommend using an organic liquid fertilizer such as a fish emulsion or an organic seaweed fertilizer. Chemical fertilizers may be used but should be diluted to approximately one half strength so that valuable roots are not damaged.

Now we come to one of the more contentious issues in the Gardening world, Organic, or Man-made feeds. I could fill screen after screen on this matter and all it would do is to confuse (Me).

Fertilize with an organic or all purpose fertilizer every week. To prevent die back, prune only when the tree is actively growing. With terminal pruning the reuse will bud back easily.

Is the purchase of organic soil important to you. How often you should water the tree. If you have your plant outside, think about how much rain fall you get.

An organic liquid fertilizer such as organic seaweed fertilizer is recommended. Chemical fertilizers can be used but they have to be diluted to half the strength so that it does not damage the roots of the juniper bonsai tree.

For those who prefer an Akadama, pumice and lava rock soil mix, you should fertilize with an organic feed, such as Whitney Farms 5-5-5 Organic feed, mixed with pelleted fish meal.

These affect bonsai trees just like other plants but can be treated using traditional organic or inorganic treatments. Remember that prevention is better than cure! The risk of diseases can be minimised by adopting good horticultural practice.

It is an important aspect, but here the opinions differ very much: Some promote the use of organic fertilizers to augment an essentially inorganic soil mix, while others will use chemical fertilizers freely.
(more.) ...

Insecticide: A chemical (synthetic or organic) used to kill or repel insects. There are numerous botanical and mineral powders that are toxic to insects, as well as biodegradable chemicals such as insecticidal soaps.

After you have identified the insect buy an insecticide (chemically or organically) to treat the trees with; be careful to follow the instructions and you might want to start using a half doses first, if necessary you can increase the doses later on.

All its parts should meld into an organic unity, creating an artistic composition. Incidentally, it is interesting to note what Plato said about art critics: a critic in order to have any worth, should be a foremost expert of the particular art form.

Three times a year it receives a good dose of liquid organic fertiliser added to the water. Pruning back its terminal growth, and occasional thinning out, needs to be done quite regularly. One needs to watch out for red spider mite in hot weather.

Flowering and fruiting bonsai need one higher in phosphorus. When you go to a nursery, especially ones into organics, look for products which can supply trace elements. One that I use is Green Sand but others are just as good.

A good mix is 1/3 aggregate (crushed quartz, decomposed granite, or haydite), 1/3 cinder, and 1/3 organic material (bark chips or coir). Particle size should be about 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch in diameter.

Inorganic fertilisers (chemicals) come in different forms: dry, liquid, slow-release, pellets, plant stakes, soluble solutions, and many others.
