Penjing in China enjoyed vigorous artistic development during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and by the early years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the art had become very popular, and the first manuals appeared.

Chinese penjing has far less codification but much more philosophical principles with open-ended applications. But the plants still dictated the horticultural rules and training techniques were basically the same as in Japanese bonsai.

The Chinese called this practice 'Penjing'. According to legends, the emperor of China during the Han Dynasty wanted to build a magnificent courtyard that featured the hills, lakes, rivers, valleys and trees that can be found within his vast empire.

In the Kamakura period, Penjing that recalled customs from the Heian period came to be drawn in some picture scrolls and documents. In the Muromachi period, Penjing has developed into various directions in Japan.
