Pinching Out an Acer palmatum in Spring The following series of pictures illustrates the first pinching out of an Acer Palmatum in Spring. This basic process will be repeated throughout the season on the most vigorous areas of the tree.
Pinching out buds. It refers to the work of pinching out new buds in early spring to curb excessive growth of tree tops or branches and make a tree grow evenly. There are two methods to pinch out new buds.
The result is that by pinching out the terminal bud, or removing a two or three bud shoot, several of the buds remaining on this stem are free to open.
Pinching out or back - A technique used in growing or shaping a tree that consists of pulling off soft new shoots with finger and thumb.
Try complete defoliation first, then pinching out new buds at the top of the tree, allowing the bottom to become thicker and fuller. Always remind yourself that the end result is an even appearance across the whole tree.
Pinching out the tips of new shoots will create short distances between pairs of leaves. This results in good branch ramification and dense foliage. The tips should be pinched out with tweezers once the new pair of leaves start to open.
The soft, new foliage of the Ginkgo can be pruned by either pinching out, or with tools. Cuts made into old wood however, will take a long time to heal over. This Ginkgo is in my collection and has a recorded history of about 120 years.
The advantage of this is that you can continue pinching out the growing tips throughout the winter, which results in a much bigger display of fuchsia flowers than if you wait until Spring before beginning.

Pruning will consist of pinching out new sprouts as they grow in unwanted places. You might also get a branch in a place you do want! As new growth matures, the plant will need pruning to shorten and shape the branches.
