Group plantings replicate a number of trees growing together in a copse, wood or a forest and reflect the interplay between the trees and their branches as they compete for light and nutrients.
Forest plantings are usually attacked differently than the normal single bonsai. Most of the time we find the pot or slab first. Then we look for tree stock to use.This might not be the best plan but it seems to always wind up that way.
A "grouped planting" is the creation of a scene through plating multiple trees in one container.
When?

As it's name a group of trees in a form that looks likes a small coppice. Always plant in odd numbers and not less than 3. Always has a dominant tree and the others generally slopping away so in silhouette forms a mound.

A. Most trees will benefit from full sun. The most important reason for this is to shorten the internodal spacing on branches and trunks.

So in the long run planting in the ground is the best solution, but only if you plan to leave your trees undisturbed for three or more years, otherwise it will be slower than container growing.

Accent plant - A separate planting, often seasonal, of small herbaceous plants, bulbs or grasses, displayed in conjunction with bonsai when on formal display.

The word bonsai literally translates to mean tray planting, but over time it has grown and taken an entirely new form.
If you only intend planting a single plant in an established border, just prepare the planting area. Make the planting hole at least twice the size of the pot and a few inches deeper, add a sprinkling of a nitrogen type fertilizer.
