Positioning the tree in the pot
The Tree should be planted at such a height in the pot as to allow the roots as they leave the trunk to be visible above the pot.

Soil Composition
Because your bonsai is growing in the restrictive confines of a pot, it is important that you use a special mixture of materials for its soil.

Soil Composition
Different trees have different soil requirements an Azalea will require a more acidic soil than a Juniper would. All soil is basically made up of two components organic and inorganic.

Positioning Of Mini Bonsai Trees
The ideal position for a Mini bonsai is a well ventilated place that faces southeast (in the northern hemisphere) but it has to be shaded from the sun if it is any longer than six hours per day.

Position the tree with the right orientation, secure with wire and then fill with soil to just below the pot rim. Gently move the soil around the roots with your fingers (some use a chopstick) to ensure that there are no air pockets.

Position the tree off center in the pot. Consider the best side/front of the tree, direction of surface roots, branch movement, any imperfections on the outside of the pot.

A position of dappled shade is ideal, if this is not possible don't worry. As long as the root system has plenty of moisture they will virtually thrive in any position in the garden.

A position where there is an opening and each trunk can be seen is the front. The distance between each trunk must be different. Do not have the trees crossing each other.

Effect of Soil Composition
Utilization of soluble fertilizers depends greatly on soil composition.

Once you have worked out the position of where the tree should sit in the pot, (usually off-centre except for cascade and semi-cascade styles), put the mesh over the drainage holes and add a layer of soil for the tree to rest on.

Peat - Partly decomposed organic matter, originating from the decomposition ofvegetation in bogs, marshes or heathland. As an ingredient of potting soil, peatassists in moisture retention.

Training bonsai normally involves the use of wire to position and shape trunk and branches. Either aluminum or annealed copper wire is used for this purpose.

At an early age, the bonsai can be trained to an angle by means of wiring the trunk until it is in position. Alternatively, the tree can be forced to grow in a slanted style by putting the actual pot on a slant, causing the tree to grow abnormally.

The process of wiring and bending causes a series of minute splits and fractures in the layers underneath the bark of the branch; as the cambium layer repairs and heals this damage, the new position is 'learnt' by the branch.

Place new soil in the pot, firmly seat the tree in its new position in the pot. Begin to tie it in loosely by drawing one wire over and twisting it to the next tie-in around the pot until you reach the first wire again.

Move branches into position and try to create an image that reflects the one in your mind. If none exist, copy something you like from a picture.
