Root Trimming and Re-Potting

THE ROOT HOOK
Soil removal and untangling roots is a regular part of the chore of repotting. A chopstick or something similar is often used, especially with small size bonsai.
Tap Root - A long root that anchors a plant by growing vertically downward. The term is often used in referring to the first undivided root of a seedling.

Many plants can grow in the raised root style, including black pine, white pine, and serissa.
Root pruning has the effect of encouraging the development of fine feeder roots that are essential for the uptake of nutrients and water. This ensures that the tree remains healthy and less susceptible to disease.

Root pruning may not be needed and is generally not recommended for succulents. Succulent roots are rarely vigorous when pruned, so the less disruption the better.
'Root-over-rock' styles of bonsai in are plants perched on a rock and the roots are growing over the rock and down into soil.
