Satsuki Azalea - Rhododendron indicum
General Information: The azalea is a member of the genus Rhododendron. It is an evergreen which in the wild grows as a small shrub (up to six feet). There are hundreds of azalea cultivars.

Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum) produces magnificent displays of flowers in late spring / early summer. This explains the origin of the satsuki name (meaning fifth moon in Japanese - corresponding to the time of flowering in June).

The Satsuki azalea group, derived from Rhododendron indicum and related species, are very popular.
A traditional alcoholic beverage made from azalea blossoms, called dugyeonju ('견주, literally "azalea wine"), is produced in Korea [8].

When it comes to bonsai, the Satsuki Azalea is a popular choice. This particular plant is very hardy and produces magnificent flowers ranging up to seven inches in diameter. Of all flowering shrubs, the Azalea is by far the most dramatic.

May and June is the time for transplanting satsuki azaleas. Do not engage in any drastic pruning now that the growth period had ended. Wiring of smaller branches can be done. Continue with the usual fertilizing.
