Bonsai Seedlings

It takes many years to grow a bonsai tree from seed but it is an immensely satisfying experience. To be able to nurture tiny bonsai seedlings to grow into mature bonsai trees is a real achievement.

Bareroot seedlings are available from a number of sources in the winter months. This is a great way to obtain a larger number of plants at very reasonable prices. These are field grown dormant deciduous and evergreen plants.

A Seedling Or A Juvenile?
You can find saplings, seedlings and young bonsais for sale in garden shops, bonsai specialty stores and (of course) the web. The older the bonsai, the more expensive it is.
Seedlings must be observed every day from now until transplanting time. When about half of the cells are looking dry, and the flat feels lighter than normal, then it's time to give it a good watering.
Seedling - The early stages of tree growth that is grown from a seed.

Slow release - A fertilizer that releases the nutrients over a period of time.
3. Seedlings:
Not all that bad a way to go if you have plenty of time. They are usually not terrifically expensive if you have to buy them. Easy to collect if you want to go that route.
The seedling used for a threadgraft must be of the same genus as the parent tree but it is also preferable that it is of the same species.
A lone seedling in the open may have grown up tall and straight (in the formal upright style). A tree growing on a cliff top buffeted by wind may have all it's branches growing on the leeward side of the trunk (Windswept Style).
As the seedlings continue to grow into saplings they can continue to be potted on until they are large enough to be grown in the ground or used immediately for bonsai training.

Knowing when to fertilise or prune
Bonsai usually require repotting every two years depending on the species (at the right time of year).
I came across my seedlings at a recent state convention where in the vendors area, the person who I am supplying the link to was selling these for use in a forest type setting.
