Introduction The Willow Leaf Ficus has grown into one of the most popular and perhaps best ficus trees for creating a shohin bonsai specimen.

 


'Shohin' is a Japanese word. It means 'tiny thing' and in the bonsai world, shohin bonsai refers to trees that are within a certain size, 6' - 8' to be specific. As for 'mame', it is a Japanese word that literally means 'bean'.

Mame or Shohin Bonsai - No more than 150mm high
Ko Bonsai - Not more than 300mm high
Chui Bonsai - Not more than 600mm high ...

Cotoneaster for Shohin
For Shohin (under 10 inches tall), Cotoneaster should be grown out in one gallon cans, and pruned back frequently to obtain many breaks on the trunk from which future branches may be selected. This process takes 2 to 4 years.

Very small trees (shohin) don't take up much space. However, they are more difficult to create as good bonsai and they do require more attention ... including frequent watering. If you have 'ready helpers', large trees may not be a problem.

(Small bonsai can be known as shohin-bonsai or mame-bonsai but we call them mini-bonsai.)

Lastly, if you wish a smaller leaf size choose a fig species or cultivar with smaller leaves which are more naturally suited to smaller and shohin sized trees. Ficus salicifolia has small leaves useful for even small bonsai.

Yaupon holly is a native of North America. They are excellent to work with and will make quality medium and shohin size bonsai. They bud back readily on old wood.

This is especially true of mame (very small bonsai). Nearly all mame should be repotted every year. Shohin (fewer than ten inch bonsai) should be repotted every year to two years depending on the species and the growing conditions.

Notes: Cotoneaster likes to sucker, so if it is not being grown as a clump, suckers must be vigilantly removed to promote trunk growth. Cotoneasters lend themselves to mame and shohin, but are harder to grow as large bonsai.

Last weekend I visited the Swindon Winter Image Bonsai Show. It was a fantastic event and very well attended by bonsai growers from across the UK. There were many trees on display, ranging from the small shohin bonsai to a large bonsai landscape.

One way in which bonsai are classified is according to size. Mame are ideally less than 10 cm (4 inches) tall and can be held in the palm of the hand. Shohin are about 25 cm (10 inches) tall, while other bonsai are larger and can not be easily moved.

The art is alive and well in Italy, as evidenced by the annual Crespi Cup of Milan. Among the prizes awarded at the Crespi cup are: best tree judged by naturalness and artistic quality; best coniferous tree; best deciduous tree; best shohin; ...
