Slow release fertilisers specially formulated for bonsai are invaluable and can be used in addition to liquid feeds. These come in many different shapes and sizes, such as rape seed cakes, pellets, granules and powder.
Slow release - A fertilizer that releases the nutrients over a period of time. Systemic - An insecticide or fungicide that enters the tree to prevent the infestation of insects or diseases.

Organic fertilizers are slow release and allow the plant somewhat of a continual feeding this way. Just like the soil ingredients that have a specific purpose, so do the different types of organic fertilizers.
It was left in the original container and fed with slow release native fertiliser and pruned quite severely. The plant responded slowly, but consistently put on new growth.
A general all-purpose liquid feed can be applied once a month in the main growing season to supplement the slow release feed.
A slow release organic fertilizer is the most common fertilizer used on red maples. Fertilize once a month with these exceptions: Do not fertilize 2 months from the time it’s repotted. Do not fertilize weak or unhealthy maple bonsai trees.
There are hunderds of different chemical fertilizers that come in powder liquid and slow release pellets. I cannot recommend any one in particular.
Feeding: Feed in spring and late summer. Feed with ericaceous slow release fertiliser. Feed in moderation to ensure, leaves do get too large. Prefers a normal to acidic soil, a dose or 2 during the summer months will help correct pH levels.
The tree was fertilised heavily in early April with slow release Osmocote cones and rapeseed cakes along with the bi-monthly dose of Miracid. It responded with a massive flush of new growth in mid May right on schedule.
Caring for the Maple Bonsai is similar to other species in that it’s safe to feed it once a month with a fertilizer that has a slow release formula.
Fertilizing: Fertilize using a slow release organic feed. High nitrogen feeding leads to undesirable large leaves as well as the extension of internodes.
In the repotting mixture you may want to include about a quarter-label-strength application of slow release solid fertilizer with micronutrients. This could be either as OsmocoteŽ granules or Gro-PowerŽ planting tablets.
For an 8 inch diameter hanging pot use 3 plants. For a 15 inch diameter hanging basket use 5 plants. Use the normal soil mix for fuchsia planting. Slow release fertilizer eg. Osmocote can also be mixed into the soil.
We also add superthrive, which is a vitamin supplement to our fertilizer mix. You may find it simpler and easier to use slow release fertilizer granules (placed over the soil) whose nutrients are released with each watering.
