While at the ASPAC in Bali (Sept 2007) I saw in the market area some curiously shaped trees that while not strictly Bonsai were trained and shaped using Bonsai principles.
Also, how long the tree has been growing since the last re-potting, how good the drainage is, the development of the root system and growing conditions (climate).
Bonsai is literally a plant, (usually a tree or shrub) grown in a tray, or dish. The first plants grown in pots were in Egypt about 4000 years ago, mostly for practical reasons, mobility, and convenience.
Decide on the front of the tree at the very beginning, because planting and shaping are done with the front of the tree in mind. However, you may change your ideas about the plants ultimate shape as you clip and prune.

TREE DEVELOPMENT METHODS
Seed - you can grow trees from seed like other plants, however most tree seeds need stratification prior to planting. This is accomplished by keeping the seeds in a cold environment for a period of time.
The tree is ready for transplanting as soon as its spring growth cycle starts and the wiring and bending are done. Begin by preparing the new pot, placing screen over the drain holes and affixing tie-in wires(see Figure #3).
This tree projects an image corresponding to the forceful style in rhetoric. Many of us find it very impressive. Others would find the deadwood excessive and somewhat overwhelming.

Tree Arrangement
I spend a lot time thinking about tree placement to get the most natural looking arrangement, and have come up with some guidelines that I think work.
Tree up to 12" - 24" tall.
Chokkan
The "formal upright" bonsai style. One of the basic styles. Branch style. Essential for this style is a straight trunk with a naturally balanced branch structure. (See also section Bonsai styles in Encyclopedia).
Tree of a Thousand Stars (Serissa foetida) - has tiny green leaves and miniature white flowers, either single or double. Needs bright, indirect light, high humidity, adequate moisture.

Photosynthesis - Bonsai trees and plants in general, use light energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.
A tree that had been repotted and root pruned should be able to survive 12 months without feeding. You may however wish to boost growth or stimulate other characteristics of your tree.

Ichi no eda
The first of lowest branch of a bonsai.
A tree should be positioned in the pot so that the trunk is neither the front, or back third of the pot (the red areas). Nor should it be planted to far away from the centre line.
A tree beside the road that is inconspicuous may live if collected, but a tree in a prominent position to be enjoyed by passers-by will always die if collected.
A tree pulled from the path of a bulldozer, even in midsummer, will live.
The tree is thought to have been nursed in its pot for 60-70 years. Its present form is a typical bonsai style and it has probably undergone many shapings and trimmings.
The tree is currently about 7¾ inches tall, 5¼ inches wide and a 2½ inches diameter at the base and living in a Japanese container (kiln unknown).
The tree should be protected from wind and direct sun for a month or two after repotting.
For a tree in an 8- to 10-inch container, after repotting there should be about 2 inches of new soil between the root mass and the outer rim of the container. The new roots grow into this fresh soil.
If the tree you intend on buying has been put up for adoption, then try to find out who the previous parents were, the conditions in which the tree was living and the manner in which they cared for it.

If your tree is not finished , then it is always as some stage of training or the other.
If your tree has wire on it when you buy it keep watch on the wire to make sure it dosen`t start cutting in to the bark of the tree. If this should happen gently remove the wire with wire cutters or by carefully unwinding it.
Select a tree with taper, movement, and low branches

Matching tree to a suitable pot
The bonsai style, the colours of the tree, the size of the tree and the texture of the leaves all need to be considered before choosing a pot.
When the tree is ready for a finished pot, usually you will put it a little left or right of center and slightly back of the center as viewed from the side. Be careful to have the precise front position you want.
Turn the tree monthly for even lighting and growth, more frequently in the spring. Outdoor bonsai may be displayed indoors 2-3 days per month at the most, but keep them away from direct sunlight, fireplaces, and other heat sources.
