Description
The Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) is an oriental deciduous tree. It is very tolerant to pollution, which is why it is often grown in cities and towns.

Overview : The Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) is very similar to its relative the Japanese Maple. It is a deciduous tree that is a traditional subject for bonsai.

Trident maple bonsai plants may be defoliated for an out of season transplant, pest bitten foliage or to promote better color and smaller leaves in time for an exhibition.

Trident Maple
The Trident Maple makes an appearance due its twin ability to grow at a good speed and to offer the enthusiast a species which spreads its roots at a prolific rate.

The Trident Maple Bonsai (Acer Buergerianum) is an outdoor deciduous bonsai highly desired for its blazing autumn foliage. Leaves are three lobed (thus the name Trident) and drought resistant. Foliage will drop during the winter.

I seriously thought about selling this chinese elm before I did some major pruning during the winter break one year.

In my experience, trident maples are very susceptible to moderately low temperatures while many other species--azaleas, for instance--are not.

Suppose one has an informal upright trident maple with a curved trunk that is two inches thick at the base and the overall height is twenty-four inches and the branch spread at the widest point is seventeen inches.

The powerful trunk of this twin trunk style Trident maple (21") gives the impression of a large tree. Old scars from sacrifice branches have healed completely. The dark blue glazed pot makes a good contrast to the light color of the trunk.

There are two maple species commercially used, Acer Buergeranium (Trident maple) and Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maple ). The Japanese maple has several cultivars some of which have beautiful,(there's no other word which fits the bill) spring foliage.

Compare the growth rates of the Trident maple with that of the Boxwood.

Some of the species successfully rooted using this method are:- Pomegranate, Willow, Myrtle, Olive, Trident Maple, Japanese Elm and Chinese Elm.

Most species of plants are suitable for this style, mainly the Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum), Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum), Beech, practically all Conifers and other ornamental trees such as the Crab Apple, Cotoneaster and Pomegranate.

Since the roots capture a lot of moisture, when it is very cold in winter the Trident Maple bonsai faces the danger of freezing at the roots. Hence, this plant requires special care against frost and excessive cold.
