Trunk

Bonsai Triple-trunkTsuchi

Trunk splitting is not recommended for use on deciduous species or species especially prone to rot, particularly if the exposed wood will be directly exposed to the soil.

The trunk of a bonsai tree is the most appealing part to create the illusion of
age. Therefore, as a first step, you should start with developing a
well-formed trunk such as good taper (kokejun), initial rise (tachiagari),
smooth curves, etc.

how to bend trunk of banyan bonsai using wiring?

Trunk chopping has a twofold purpose. First to reduce the height of the tree and secondly to induce taper into the trunk. I have developed an improvement on the usual method in the case of the formal upright style.

A trunk should be thicker at its base than at the top of the tree; this is called tapering of the trunk. Although it is hard to improve irregularities in the thickness of a trunk (select trees well before buying them) it is possible to make changes: ...

The trunk is what makes the bonsai, it gives it both its grace and power. When choosing a bonsai or material for conversion always get the best trunk you can, one with good taper and branches leaving the trunk all around the tree.

After the trunk cut, the tree will explode with new growth, and hopefully a new leader will develop at the top of the cut (the first branch position). Let this leader and all the wild branches under it grow for several years.

While styling and selecting, the 'fake trunk' can be refined in shape and size to be as interesting as possible. Fake roots, jins, etc. You should make it 'artistically' part of the tree and it's design ...

In analyzing the tree, we were all of the opinion that the most logical design for this tree would be a hollow trunk design.

Trunk
With most forms, the trunk must taper from its thinnest point at the apex to its widest point at its base. It is preferable for the trunk to taper as gradually as possible.

Main Trunk Wiring
First Step - Prepare a 5 mm aluminum wire by cutting a length a little longer than from trunk base to tip of tree. Poke one end into the soil about two inches deep near the raffia knot at base of trunk.

Curved trunk - Myogi style
This style is suitable for practically all evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs. The most popular include pine, spruce, cherry and azalea.

Slanted Trunk Style (SHAKAN)
SHO-SHAKAN. The first branch is placed on the slanted side of the trunk, with the branches on one side slightly upwards, and on the other side slightly downwards.

Trunk bark
[edit] Stem
Ginkgo branches grow in length by growth of shoots with regularly spaced leaves, as seen on most trees. From the axils of these leaves, "spur shoots" (also known as short shoots) develop on second-year growth.

Trunk: this section refers to the whole lower part of the tree up to and including the first branch. The base of the tree should be a natural continuation of the rootage, starting at the widest part of the base, tapering up to the main branch.

Trunk should be:
As large as possible;
Have bark with character: thick, with furrows or ridges, gnarly;
Have taper -- fairly even diminishing of diameter from base to apex.

The trunk and branches of the informal upright style, or Moyogi incorporate visible curves, but the apex of the informal upright is always located directly above the trunk's entry into the soil line.

The trunk of an informal upright curves or bends, changing direction but still maintaining a vertical silhouette, with the tip directly above the base of the tree.

The trunk and surface root development are the two most important aspects of bonsai design. To create the image of an old tree, made small, there must be a trunk which has a buttressed base exhibiting the character and strength produced by age.

The trunk grows down below the level of the container, often twisting as it does so.
Kengai (Cascade)
In nature, a tree growing near a cliff subject to heavy snows, avalanches and wind may assume this inverted position.

The Trunk of the Slating Style Bonsai at an angle at and angle to the surface, as though the tree was blow sideways by a strong gust of wind, or knocked over in landslide or by another larger tree falling onto it and knocing it sideways, ...

The trunk can be either informal (curved) or formal (straight), but must be on an angle to either the right or left (never to the front), and the apex should not be directly over the base of the tree, ...

The trunk should have roots spreading radially from around its base; roots that grow upwards or recurve from the base (nebari) are considered ugly.

Twin trunk styles treat the two trunks together as one tree (Left, back on trunk1, right, back on #2, etc.) Main branches should not fall directly over each other; move one a little forwarding the pot and the other one back.

Twin trunk style Juniper
Trees are designed for the outdoors and thrive when they are exposed to seasonal changes of weather. The rain, wind and sun are all important to the tree as is the dormant winter period when the tree does not grow.

When trunk is seen, it is a very old tree.
It is surprised because surprisingly there are many thin roots though it is worried about whether bud comes out.

Pruning and wiring
Old branches harden and are very brittle, so basically shape rosemary by pruning. Wire only while the branches are young, up to about 2 years.

their trunks often being wider than a foot across the horizontal. Perhaps it seems odd then that these massive growing trees make excellent Bonsai trees. Yet strangely they do, and with proper care will look spell-binding as a miniature tree.

A single trunk, similar to the formal and informal upright, but cultivated with the trunk growing at an angle other than 90 degrees to the ground. Branches are again balanced and well spaced.

Wire the trunk using anodised aluminium wire (available from Imperial Bonsai Nursery) first then wire thicker branches starting at the lowest part.
This skill takes a lot of practice.

That the trunk of a bonsai tree contributes more to the illusion of age than any other design element.

Kokejun - Trunk that tapers toward the top.
Meiboko - Old, antique Bonsai
Meiseki - Famous stones.

Scrub the trunk and primary branches of the tree to remove the winter accumulation of moss and mildew. Remove the loose bark of Junipers to prevent insect nesting. Inspect the needles of Pines for needle cast and pine scale.

Consider the trunk of the bonsai. What is usually desired is a trunk with movement and good taper. Nothing new there. But does that taper make the trunk look taller. Older and more massive. Will increasing that taper make it look taller.

When bending trunks and branches, be sure to support the area being bent by wrapping it with raffia. Also, bend trunks and branches slowly and gradually to prevent damage to the tree.

Second, the trunk and the way it's formed. In the case of the solitary tree, it's especially important as to how the trunk emerges from the roots and the rising taper that it develops.

They are then normally planted in a course sand and allowed to develop roots.
Trunk cropping - Using this method the person can start with nursery stock with a large caliper and then cut the trunk down to an appropriate high.

The wiring specialist's way is about like this: in the autumn the tree should have been potted so that the trunk is inclined to slant.

One of the branches is lower and extends a little farther from the trunk than the others. Also, the lowest two branches are trained to come forward on the front side of the tree, one slightly higher than the other.

The main flow of the trunk will be slanted with a natural spread of branches and foliage. The angle of the slant between 10-30 degrees off of true vertical. The branching should begin about one-third of the length of the trunk above the soil.

To achieve an effective formal upright, make sure that about one third of the trunk is visible from the front, either from the base to the first branch or cumulatively, as seen through the tracery of its branches.

Training bonsai normally involves the use of wire to position and shape trunk and branches. Either aluminum or annealed copper wire is used for this purpose.

The trunk and roots are perhaps the key to great bonsai. The trunk should have a very significant taper from the base to the apex. This taper should be gradual.

so it is with a tree; in a well-poised trunk the larger limbs, and the foliage they carry, appear to be balanced without an effort....

Hold the tree with its front view toward you and place the base of the trunk very slightly off-center to the opposite side from which the dominant visual weight of its branches occurs.

Wiring, a relatively modern method of training bonsai trunks and branches into the desired forms, has become commonly accepted. It is often used in place of, or in conjunction with the traditional methods of long-term pruning and hemp-rope binding.

It was rather neglected but had an interesting base and trunk which was the catalyst for the purchase.

Raft style bonsai are bonsai which mimic a natural phenomenon where a tree which has been toppled (typically due to erosion or another natural force) begins to grow a new root system out of the part of the trunk that is in contact with the ground.

branch bender - a clamp or jack used to bend branches or trunk
branch splitter - a cutting tool used to divide branch or trunk to allow it to be bent more easily.

Bonsai done in the formal upright style have upright trunks that are straight and tapering. Slant style bonsai are aptly named. Their trunks are straight, like those of the formal upright style, but lean at a slant from the surface of the soil.

To produce a realistic illusion of a mature tree, all parts of the ideal bonsai -- trunk, branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, fruits, buds, roots -- should be in perfect scale with the size of the tree.

This Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' has a strong root and trunk structure. It is beleived to be about 30 years old and has a trunk diameter of at least 3 inches at base. It is 45cm high x 30cm wide.

Next is checking the trunk. The shape of the trunk will basically determine the style you choose. In almost all cases, however, a thick base, which tapers gradually and gently to a thin apex, will make for a nice tree.

The wire is placed on the tree wiring two branches together or a branch and the truck together, winding the wire in a 45 degree angle snug around the trunk and branches.

The tree is shaped by wiring branches to it's trunk as it grows. The way these branches are wired will determine what shape the tree takes. As the tree grows, changing the wiring configuration will alter the shape of the branches and trunk.
