Description: Native to China the Twisted Willow is a tall spreading graceful tree with contorted weeping branches which generally grows to about 30 meters tall. The willow leaves are lanceolate-acuminate and between 5 and 10 cm long and about 1 cm.

 


Bankan (Twisted)
The bankan style is thought to have originated in China with the beginnings of penjing, the Chinese art that led to bonsai in Japan.

The wire is twisted up the trunk or along the branches, keeping each twist at a 45 degree angle. Always start at the trunk and work your way up and outwards from there.

Bankan The Twisted Bonsai Technique
It’s commonly thought that the Bankan Bonsai style originated in deepest China at the time of Penjing. This is the original name of the Chinese art form that led to we know as Bonsai today.

The Twisted Style is probably closest to what came over from China; the Chinese are very fond of this style and often refer to them as "dragon" trees (In Feng Shui, the Green Dragon is an auspicious presence in the garden) especially in the East).

Candles are either cut with scissors or candles may be twisted off at the desired length. This serves to shorten the candle, the internodes, and the needle length.

Another feature of potentilla, related to its twisted vein growth, is the poor healing over of large pruning cuts.

Whether this was intended as a positive or negative statement, it leaves us to believe that growing dwarfed and twisted trees in containers was an accepted practice among the upper class of Japan by the Kamakura period.

Now whether the artist is calling it that style, I'm not sure, but it has the classic look of the clip and grow method which is highly taught in chinese penjing, and of course the very radical movement of the twisted trunk also.

Branches can be bent with less breakage if they are twisted along their axis at the same time they are being bent.
