Ulmus parvifolia Jacq., the Chinese Elm, is a species of elm native to China, Japan, North Korea and Vietnam.

 


Ulmus parvifolia, var 'Catlin', is a sport of the common Chinese elm. It is partly evergreen in mild climate and evergreen in the south. Its leaves are a 1/4" to 3/4" long and are a shiny dark green, lanceolate and smaller than zelkova.

Ulmus parvifolia/Chinese Elm are often sold as indoor bonsai and as such are acclimatised to indoor growing conditions, however Chinese Elms are temperate trees and fully frost hardy.

CHINESE ELM (Ulmus Parvifolia)
The Chinese Elm is one of the most popular choices for bonsai. This tree can easily grow up to 60 feet in the wild. However, the Chinese Elm can also be trained as the perfect bonsai specimen.

The Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) Is a very easy tree to grow. Deciduous in temporate areas, it may retain its leaves in tropical and sub tropical regions. The Chinese elm is often wrongly sold as an indoor tree here in Europe and probably elseware.

The Chinese Elm or Ulmus Parvifolia, is a tree that many bonsai enthusiasts have in their collection. It seems it's one of those trees that's synonymous with bonsai as is the Black Pine, only a lot easier to care for and style.

Subtropicals such as Chinese elms, Ulmus parvifolia, have little if any dormancy requirements. In colder areas they drop their leaves, go dormant and act like deciduous trees.
