Underplanting and Accent Plants
(Ground Cover and Accompaniment Plants for Bonsai)
Article written by Kevin Bailey, of The Vale Of Clwyd Bonsai Society.

Underplanting and Accent Plants
Ground Cover and Accompaniment Plants for Bonsai When exhibiting Bonsai formally, they are kept uncluttered. A minimal underplanting of well chosen and perfectly grown moss is traditional.

UNDERPLANTING AND MOSS
Under planting with small plants or moss can be used to complete the image of a group of trees in nature. Moss is often used to represent grass in group plantings.

Accessory plant or planting - This term refers to additional plants within the confines of the bonsai pot as underplanting for the tree or trees, especially in larger group or Saikei plantings.

These can include underplantings of black mondo grass, dwarf bamboo, or plaques, dragons, bamboo deer scarers, Buddhas and many other items. Positioned subtly they add extra interest when happened upon.
