Most beginners use a general potting mix for bonsai soil until they get the hang of things - and I recommend that you do this too - just until you familiarise yourself with the other processes involved in bonsai.

A variety of informal containers may house the bonsai during its development, and even trees that have been formally planted in a bonsai pot may be returned to growing boxes from time to time.

All of my trees then were of the deciduous variety, and my favorite being the chinese elm. Most of my chinese elm stock was of the small size variety, except for one which at the time was my favorite mainly because of its mature size and age.

Pots come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The two things to watch for when buying pots for Bonsai is that there is at least one hole in the bottom of the pot to allow for good drainage and that the inside of the pot is not glazed.

3. A Magnifying Glass is useful for seeing tiny insects, such as mites and thrips that may be difficult to see with the naked eye. Most variety drug stores and art supply stores sell magnifying glasses. Try to get one with at least 3X magnification.
People take workshops for a variety of reasons, and not all of them are what you might believe them to be.
If you are in doubt bend the branch in several stages over a period of time. Each variety of plant will have different tolerances and setting times. Older branches and conifers will take a lot longer than young or deciduous trees.

By the turn of the 19th century, the philosophy of bonsai began to take a somewhat different approach. New styles, training methods, and even a larger variety of plants and trees were used.
There are kinds that it blooms in February (Kan-boke), and April(Haru-boke). It seems to be difficult with the small pot though "Toyonishiki" which red, white are mixed in is a variety of "Haru-boke".
Most of the species that we use for cutting stock are of the 'hard to find' variety, most of these trees were cheap and ugly, by keeping them in the ground we re-shape and refine them while taking cuttings for propigation.
I prefer the matt dark brown pots by English potters such as Gordon Duffett or Derek Aspinal. Japanese imported pots are also nice, though expensive, but larger bonsai nurseries such as Herons and Greenwood have a very good variety of stock at all ...
