Vermiculite is commonly used in bonsai soil as an ingredient to achieve the inorganic content ratio. It is a mineral in the silicate family. What makes it perfect for any kind of bonsai is the fact that it is neutral and water-absorbent.
Vermiculite (pictured left) is a naturally occurring, mica mineral similar to Perlite. Again, it has excellent water retention and drainage properties.

You need to fill your plastic container with vermiculite and moisten it. The vermiculite should not be dripping wet but humid. Place your tree seeds in the plastic container and mix it with the moist vermiculite.
I use about eight parts perlite to one part peat and one part vermiculite. The peat and vermiculite make the perlite easier to handle, reduce the fluffiness and aid in punching the holes for the cuttings.
Use damp vermiculite as a rooting medium, and dipped the cut end in a rooting hormone before inserting it in a hole made with a pencil in the rooting medium.

Maybe mix dirt and vermiculite for instance. Overwatering plants under LEDs is not uncommon even with this more porous medium. Your plants need far less water without the radiant heat of traditional lighting.
