Seed leaves (cotyledons) on seedlings, borne in a whorl of 4-24.
Juvenile leaves, which follow immediately on seedlings and young plants, 2-6 cm long, single, green or often blue-green, and arranged spirally on the shoot.

Rule Two: Reduce the Whorl of Secondary Candles to a Forked Branch
In fall, remove all the branches that formed from the whorl of SECONDARY candles except for two. This rule is much more straight forward and easier to understand than rule one.

Over years of cultivation, remove whorled branches and ultimately leave only one or two branches from each whorl. In the bottom one-third of the pine do not remove any branches until there is good taper, and/or there is strong "knobbing" occurring.

Buds most often occur in clusters or whorls at the end of shoots. The general task is to select two of them to keep and remove the others. These two buds will form a forked shoot. forks are the most useful and aesthetically pleasing branch formation.

Their habit of throwing out whorls of branches leads to bar branches and trunks can have poor taper unless care is taken in training, backbudding is rare so it can be difficult to keep the foliage mass close to the trunk.

The secondary branches appear in whorls and shoot out long and straight. These are a little bit of a challenge when styling.

One of the most major characteristics in this regard is that the bud whorls that occur at the branch ends of branches that have not been pruned properly.

One such characteristic is the bud whorls that occur at the branch ends of branches that have not been pruned properly.

Hinoki cypress also tends to form awkward whorls of foliage if not properly pruned. There is an excellent article by Kamajiro Yamada in International Bonsai 1995/No. 3 which gives detailed instructions accompanied with photographs of how to do this.
