Over the years I have been writing articles for Bonsai4me.com I have been asked by enthusiasts in colder climates than my own, how they should provide Winter Protection for their bonsai.

 


Outdoor Bonsai Tree Winter Care
Tropical bonsai trees are grown indoors while varieties of trees from temperate zones can be grown as bonsai trees outdoors.

If you live in the tropics, snow is rarely a problem.
However, when the cold does head south into tropical and subtropical regions, even a light frost for some plants can be devastating.

Winter Care
Ficus bonsai should be kept indoors during the winter months. Display them in a sunny spot that does not go below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

As you would expect from a tree that is native to this region of the American continent, cedars are very winter hardy.

Winter care: Subject to local conditions, but this is among the hardiest of trees.

Many other plants, such as cotoneaster , natal plum (Carissa gandiflora), firethorn (Pyracantha sp.), fuchsia , and juniper can be used, depending on availability and difficulty of winter care.

Soil:
Kanuma or not kanuma, that is the question.

Winter care is simple, as they are very hardy, tolerating below zero temperatures. Smaller trees could be dug in the ground to the top of the pot and mulched, or winter over as you would the rest of your outdoor bonsai.

What after sales service does the supplier offer (repotting, winter care, holiday care etc.)?
Will the seller give a discount for cash?! (Please get a receipt as proof of purchase in all cases this is very important).

As the trees go bare and the North winds start howling, we start thinking of winter care and the needs of the trees in this time of the year.
