Xylem - The xylem is the principal water-conducting tissue of vascular trees and plants. The xylem also takes part in food storage and the conduction of vital minerals to the leaves.

The xylem is formed by cells that elongate as they grow, these not only thicken their sides with lignin but ultimately break down their dividing walls where they meet tip-to-tip, ...

Once inside the root tips the water is moved through a series of supporting cell into the water transporting vessel the xylem.

The removal of the bark, cambium, and phloem, but not the xylem, prevents carbohydrates and photosynthates from flowing down the trunk past the girdling site but still allows water and mineral nutrients to flow upward to the leaves.

Each hydraulic pathway, cambial lifeline, or xylem and phloem conduit system, is sectored-completely divided from the rest of the plant. From a practical viewpoint, this means that each major root supplies one side of the tree or one major branch.

It is located in a vascular bundle between the xylem and the phloem. Tsugiki grafting occurs when cambiums of daiki (stock used for grafting) and hogi (daiki-grafting branches) conjugate.

It is more risky to wire any other time, as during the growing season, the cambium is full of sap and is literally floating on the xylem and can be easily damaged, killing the branch.
