Arithmetic Mean
The arithmetic mean of a set of two or more values is the sum of all the values divided by the number of values.

Arithmetic mean
The arithmetic mean or simple average is calculated by adding up all the numbers whose average is needed, and dividing the aggregate by the number of numbers.
For example, the arithmetic mean of 4,8 and 16 is (4+8+16) ÷3 = 9.3.

Averages
An average is an arithmetic mean of a group of stocks designed to represent the overall market or some part of it. An average differs from an index in that it is not weighted. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the most common average.

The mean, or more accurately the arithmetic mean, is the sum of a set of values divided by the total number of values. The mean is what is meant in everyday usage by the word average.

Average
The most common average is the arithmetic mean. This is computed by adding a group of values together and dividing by the total number of values in the group.

Indexes are usually weighted averages rather than simple arithmetic means that are measured relative to a base value or period. The Consumer Price Index, for example, measures the prices of consumer good, weighted by the quantities purchased.

The geometric mean of the same four observations is 10.77. It is computed by multiplying each observed value and then deriving the nth root of that number. The geometric mean can only be equal to or less than the comparable arithmetic mean.

Geometric mean of A and B is the square root of (A*B). The geometric mean of A, B, and C is the cube root of (A*B*C). And so forth. Contrast this to the arithmetic means, which are .5*(A+B) and .333*(A+B+C).
