The Dow Jones Averages refer to three price-weighted stock market indexes maintained by the editors of the Wall Street Journal. The first of the Dow Jones Averages to be created was the Dow Jones Transportation Average.

Averages
Various ways of measuring the trend of securities prices, one of the most popular of which is the Dow Jones Industrial Average of 30 industrial stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Averages
An average is an arithmetic mean of a group of stocks designed to represent the overall market or some part of it. An average differs from an index in that it is not weighted. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the most common average.
