You might use a buy stop order if you have sold stock short anticipating a downward movement of market price of the security. If, instead, the price rises to the stop price, the order will be executed, limiting your loss.

An example is a combination buy limit/buy stop order, wherein the buy limit is below the current market and the buy stop is above.

A recommendation to buy a specific security when a the security's price exceeds a certain level of resistance by placing a buy stop order at that level of resistance.

Buy stop orders are placed above the present market price. Sell stop orders are placed below the present market price (also known as a stop loss). If a stock gaps past the stop order, it becomes a market order and is filled at the next trading price.
